  • First-time collaboration between Hong Kong International Airport & Green Monday
  • To implement healthy & nutritious green diet on “World Food Day”
  • To promote “Green Monday” idea to all Hong Kong residents and overseas tourists

As Hong Kong’s gateway to the world, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has been putting great efforts into becoming “The World’s Greenest Airport”. HKIA has implemented over 120 environmental projects and policies covering a wide range of areas, including the latest collaboration to promote a six-month “Green Monday” (or meat-free Monday) campaign at HKIA. As of today, 57 food & beverage partners and airport lounges have pledged to offer a vegetarian menu option every Monday, or even on a daily basis.

The Hon Bernard Chan, GBS, JP, Member of the Executive Council of HKSAR; Mr Yau Shing-mu, JP, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing; Ms Florence Hui Hiu-fai, SBS, JP, Under Secretary for Home Affairs; Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director, Corporate Development for Airport Authority Hong Kong; Mr David Yeung & Mr Francis Ngai, Co-founders of Green Monday, together with the two Green Monday International Ambassadors, Vivian Chow and Mr Leo Ku, jointly officiated at the kick-off ceremony of the “Go Green Monday @ Hong Kong International Airport” campaign.

The 57 food & beverage partners also took the pledge to “Go Green Monday @ HKIA”. Please refer to the Green Monday website (http://www.greenmonday.org.hk/hkia.php#pledge) and Appendix 1 for more information on participating restaurant outlets and airline lounges at Hong Kong International Airport. After the ceremony, a Green Dish Tasting Expo was arranged so that the public and visitors could savour green canapés served by some 15 restaurant partners at HKIA.

Mr Yau Shing-mu, JP, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing stated: “Hong Kong International Airport is Hong Kong’s gateway to the world. In such collaboration, Airport Authority Hong Kong and Green Monday can work together to promote a green and healthy diet. This will bring an innovative airport experience to visitors from all over the world and enhance the environmentally friendly image of Hong Kong.”

Ms Florence Hui Hiu-fai, SBS, JP, Under Secretary for Home Affairs noted: “The Hong Kong SAR Government has continuously supported the development of many social enterprises. In the past, Green Monday has reached out to different social groups including corporates, schools, and food outlets, aiming to promote a green diet culture. Through this collaboration with HKIA, Green Monday aims to spread this green message to visitors from all over the world.”

Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director, Corporate Development, Airport Authority Hong Kong, said: “Airport Authority Hong Kong is proud to collaborate with Green Monday on this special campaign to promote Hong Kong International Airport as the world’s first airport to fully support and advocate a meat-free green diet and lifestyle. We are delighted that 57 food outlets have already joined the campaign.”

David Yeung, Co-founder of Green Monday, said: “We specially selected “World Food Day” to kick-off the “Go Green Monday @ Hong Kong International Airport” Campaign. This year’s “World Food Day” theme is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition”. Green Monday advocates vegetarianism as the anchor in promoting green living as it is the easiest and most impactful way for each person to cultivate a healthy, environmental friendly lifestyle.

Hong Kong International Airport and Green Monday will continue to promote “Green Monday” in HKIA, encouraging more restaurant partners to join. According to Green Monday’s statistics, if passengers choose to eat meat-free meals every Monday, a total of 4,000 tonnes of carbon emissions would be reduced as a result.

To offset the carbon generated by this event, Airport Authority Hong Kong and Green Monday have worked with Carboncare Asia to support afforestation and reforestation projects on degraded lands in Northwest Sichuan.
