ATC/ATM: Operational efficiency

Development plays a major role in enhancing air traffic efficiency, says Kornél Szepessy, CEO of Hungarian air navigation service provider, HungaroControl

European air traffic control is undergoing radical changes. The Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme sets increasingly serious challenges for air traffic control (ATC) across the continent. Hungarian ANSP HungaroControl has launched a complex new development programme guided by the challenges of integration which is in advance of EU performance targets. HungaroControl’s simulations and developments indicate that the aviation costs of airlines may be significantly reduced by the introduction of traffic management procedures jointly devised by the ANSPs and by shortening through concerted efforts the routes currently flown. Moreover, this reduction certainly exceeds the levels that can be achieved by realistically planned cuts in air navigation costs.
